Model T Custom need Gear Set

Model T Coupe with 302 engine.

Question:  Understandably, this is a aam 021custom application. I have shoehorned a Hipo 302 with a C4 and narrowed 8″ rear into a 1925 Model T Coupe. I am running 10″x15″ tires on the rear and 5″x14″ up front. Originally the rear had 2.78 gears. I have installed 3.80 with a locker but feel the RPM will be quite high for a comfortable long distance ride and a 12 gallon fuel tank. I am leaning towards either 3.00 or 3.25 rear ration. Any advice?

Answer:  Below is a quick formula that will let you calculate te correct gear ratio that you need.

RPM= MPH x  Gear Ratio x  336   then divide this by tire diameter in inches. This will tell you what RPM you would be at with whatever MPH & Ratio you select.

Change Gear Ratio Dodge Larime

I have  1999 Dodge Larime 1/3=2 ton pickup 318 automatic 4WD

Question: Would like to know if you have a 4.10 ring&pinion set front and rear. For my truck .Also would like to add a front locker .I have a 5 inch lift and 33/12.5/15 tires. If so cost and shipping to Hawaii.

Answer:   We can provide the following part for your application:

  • Rear diff should be 9.25 inch Chrysler order our ring and pinion number PFC9.25-410 your cost $ 214.48
  • You should also probably change the bearings you will need part number PFR-925-R your cost is $117.72
  • Front Dana 44 ring and pinion kit  is our part number PFDN70738-5X your cost is $ 263.92
  • Again you should change the bearings order part number PFD 706032X your cost is $ 31.60
  • For the front locker we recommend the True Trac part number PF913A592 your cost is $530.24 plus S&H.

I have a 1973 Dodge Challenger 318 engine with automatic

Question:  I have a 1973 Dodge Challenger with a 8.75 diff it is a 489 differential and I’m looking for the standard ring and pinion 2.74-1 do you have anything in stock, maybe even 2.9-1?

Answer: Nothing out there that we know of, a 3.55  ratio is the closest we can get.

1970 Pontiac Firebird need new Positraction & Gears

I have a 1970 Pontiac Firebird with the 455 engine and automatic transmission.

Question:  The firebird needs positraction and a new change in gears from 2-56 to ? The firebird has the TH400 transmission, 8.2 10 bolt Pontiac rear end. need something with more pulling power and still comfortable to drive down the hi way. 3,08 or 3.36 ? had a TH350 in car but 455 with  60 over mild camshaft, ate them ! Went with 400 now lost some pull in 1st and 2nd gear. what to do and how much?

Answer:  You can figure you RPM at whatever MPH you want to drive with this formula RPM = MPH X Gear Ratio X 336 then divide this by the tire diameter in inches.

  • You will also need a bearing rebuilt order our part number PFR-10-82 your cost is $ 116.41 plus S&H. These are all high quality aftermarket parts.

Ford 8.8 inch Explorer Differential Problem

I have a Ford Explorer 1996, call the dealer with VIN and he told me it was the 8.8 inch differential.

Question:  My rear end is making a lot of noise, can you help me diagnose?  What parts should I order?

Answer:  Ring and Pinion Set damaged or worn out Chipped ring gear makes a loud click or clang. The leading cause of chipped teeth on the ring or pinion gear is abuse. This abuse usually happens when the vehicle gets stuck. The tendency is to rock the vehicle backwards and forwards simply by shifting from reverse to low and back repeatedly attempting to break free, this puts high force on the teeth causing one or two to fail.

Be sure your backlash is correct, and your pinion and carrier bearing preload is correct. Check your differential specification for rotational torque on the pinion, and the carrier should have to be tapped directly into position, not hammered hard or fall in and out. Improper preload can be a main cause of early bearing failure. Checking the ring and pinion gear pattern that is the best way to determine an excellent install. The gear set and housing determine the correct install depth (check your rear end specification), you will need a magnetic base and dial indicator to get this correct.  We would suggest that this repair be left to some one with experience and tools,  It would be a good idea for you to provide the parts, this will save you some money!  You can see the ring and pinion parts that we can supply on our site.
